Welcome to my world
In 1984 Jonathan Leeming moved to South Africa from England. In Africa he found bigger and better spiders and scorpions and lept into the world of conservation and education. Following his move to South Africa, Jonathan soon became an authority on southern African spiders and scorpions.
In 2003 his ground breaking book wrote Scorpions of southern Africa published by Struik Nature, was published. For the first time, a book on scorpions was available to the general public and soon Jonathan was giving lectures, presentations and courses all over Africa. The natural step was to move into motivational speaking, touching on subjects such as the fear of the known and how knowledge is power.
We are deep into the year, with February\ March the month of scorpion stings. This is the time of the year when we get more scorpion stings than any other. It's the warmest time of the year which explains their high surface activity. There has been some interesting spider bites and scorpion stings recently from some unusual culprits. It's nice to get this information and to be able to help. My project at Tswalu Kalahari is ongoing. It's such a privilege to be able to work in such an amazing place. Another survey is finishing off, with another starting in the next couple of months. Book wise, my First Aid Guide to Spider Bites and Scorpion Stings is just about finished. It's should be in print by the 15th March. I have to say that it's the best guide to spider bites and scorpion stings out there. A lot of effort and thought has gone into it. To make it even more rounded, I've had more than a few people read it and give their comments. My Occupational Health Courses are rocking! With courses booked at various mining organisations in Southern Africa.
Lectures are being organised for Cape Town so you guys will get your chance. If you would like a course organised in your area drop me an email and we can chat about it. If you have any ideas for the website, please let me know and I will see what I can do.

I’ve added scorpion sting poster to my website which can be downloaded from my website. It shows the difference between a highly venomous and weakly venomous scorpion.
Please feel free to download the posters and forward it to anyone who may be interested. Many clubs and wildlife estates have asked if they can forward the posters (or links) to their members. Please do. The more we get out there the more scorpions and snakes will benefit from an increased understanding.

Venmous Creatures - the Inside Story
A short video on how venomous scorpions really are. Many people think that all scorpions are highly venomous. This is certainly not the case. The following video illustrates how venomous scorpions actually are through practical examples.
Note that no scorpions were harmed during the making of this video. I wish I could say the same for my willing volunteers! Just want to say thanks to all that volunteered. I said I'd make you famous!
Hunting scorpions in South Africa's Kruger National Park

When travelers visit Kruger National Park in South Africa they expect to see plenty of wildlife. Most come hoping to spot the "Big Five" which includes lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos, but they'll also see plenty of zebras, monkeys, and hippos too. What most don't know is that South Africa also has more than 160 species of scorpions and countless spiders as well. While those critters aren't quite as popular as the elephants and lions of Kruger, they can still be fun to spot while visiting the park.
On my recent visit to Kruger I had the unique opportunity to spend a day searching for a variety of scorpion and spider species with Jonathan Leeming, author of the book Scorpions of South Africa. Leeming has spent more than 25 years studying the creepy crawlies of Kruger and trekking through the bush with him is akin to tracking crocodiles with Australia's late, great Steve Irwin. Much like Irwin, Leeming has the same enthusiasm for his work, and a big personality to match his energy. He is also extremely knowledgeable. Leeming has probably knows more about South Africa's scorpion population than most people will ever know.
A short course on scorpions, conducted by Jonathan Leeming, one of South Africa’s leading authorities in this field, was held at Tanda Tula. Guides from both Tanda Tula and Kings Camp participated in the two day course and were given a wonderful insight into these tiny creature’s lives. The course was a mixture of both practical and theoretical application.
