New Book: Filmer's Spiders

Hi Scorpion Fanatic!

There is a new Spider book which will hit the shelves early May 2010. Norman Larsen from Cape Town has done an amazing job of revising Martin Filmers book. If you are interested in spiders you must get you hands on this book. It contains all the latest spider updates, new photos and new information. It's the most current and up to date spider book in Southern Africa.

THE BOOK
Fully revised and updated, Filmer’s Spiders: an Identification Guide to Southern Africa features all 69 families of spider that occur in this region. A fresh layout, full-colour photographs throughout – many of them new – and diagrams of diagnostic features make this a quick and easy guide for use in the field. The spiders are grouped into web-living, ground-living and plant-Iiving species to aid identification.

Each family is described in terms of the spiders’ lifestyle, habitat, size, behaviour and venom potential, and the best collecting methods are given in each case. For those species whose venom is potentially harmful to man, the effects and recommended treatment of bites are discussed. This handy format book will appeal to anybody wishing to gain insight into the daily lives of spiders.

THE AUTHORS
The late Dr Martin R. Filmer enjoyed a life-long interest in wildlife, and for a number of years served on the committee of the Witwatersrand Bird Club. Discovering an interest in spiders, Dr Filmer pursued his interest academically, and decided to write on the topic to make the study of these intriguing animals more easily accessible to the general public.

Despite devoting most of his time to the study of spiders, Norman Larsen still describes himself as a naturalist, with his knowledge ranging from tiny arthropoda to large mammals. Norman is also a skilled photographer, and is an Associate Arachnologist at the Iziko South African Museum.

The book has been renamed in honour of the late Dr Martin Filmer. Having known Mmartin for many years I know that he would have been very pleased with the new revision. I know Norman has put alot of effort into the new revision which I'm sure will boost the interest in the amazing creatues.

Available from all major bookshops!
